Measuring the impact of Sports on Youth Develoment

On March 1st, GRS Co-Founder and Africa Executive Director Kirk Friedrich participated in a panel hosted by USAID in Washington, D.C. on “Measuring the Impact of Sports on Youth Development”. Sponsored by the Office of Development Partners (ODP), over 125 guests and staff heard from NGO leadership who work with sports as a platform for youth development and spoke on the evaluation techniques for measuring the impact of these programs.

Welcome! My name is Tinacho Chitongo and I am a Field Intern in Port Elizabeth, South Africa with Grassroot Soccer (GRS), an organization that actively uses the power of the game of football/soccer to educate and inform youths about HIV and AIDS. This blog will be my way of highlighting the important work Grassroot Soccer does to you from my perspective in the organization. HIV and AIDS have had a major impact in sub-Saharan Africa, with high infection rates and associated problems hampering several nations from fulfilling their potential. The tide is changing however, and organizations such as GRS are leading the charge to reduce infection rates by educating the next generation. My internship will provide me with an opportunity to serve and help out an organization whose mission and vision I firmly believe in. I am also fund raising to cover my expenses for the internship. I would appreciate any and all contributions (see link below).

Grassroot Soccer terms.

Skillz Coaches - local peer educators that are trained to deliver the Skillz curriculum to youths aged between 12 and 18. Our coaches are based in the communities they work in.

Intervention - An intervention is a deliberate process by which change is introduced into peoples' thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Our interventions focus on HIV prevention and life skills lessons led by Skillz Coaches.

HCT - HIV Counseling and Testing - we typically host HCT soccer tournaments where kids play soccer and they are given incentives to find out their HIV status at the same venue in an all day event.
